Without surgical intervention, the balance and antegrade and retrograde flow can change as pulmonary vascular resistance drops creating a “steal” from the systemic circulation. For this reason, a surgical intervention (either a Norwood procedure or a hybrid procedure) is generally warranted within the first few days of life.
